SHARE THE STORY BIOGRAPHIES
As part of the “Share the Story” project,
biographies of the 45 individuals who were chosen as one of the “History
Makers of the High Plains” by the “Amarillo Globe News” in
2000, and who are buried at Llano Cemetery, are being published
individually in the Llano Messenger.
Every family has a story to tell. But sometimes those stories don’t
get written down and, with the passage of time, they are lost.
Don’t let this happen to your family.
In an effort to preserve the histories of families who have chose
Llano, a new project is being undertaken. It is called “Share
the Story.” Families are being asked to share the stories
of their family members at Llano.
“
This project serves two purposes,” according to Carol Lovelady,
public relations coordinator. “First, we will help families
preserve their stories. Second, we will be enhancing the history
of the cemetery.”
“
Llano has a rich heritage,” Lovelady said. “The story
of the cemetery itself has already been written. But Llano is much
more than the grounds and the buildings. Our history includes the
stories of those who are buried here,” she said. “We
have more than 46,000 burials at Llano, each with a story. We want
to know those stories to collect and preserve them for future generations.”
In the year 2000, the Amarillo Globe News compiled a list of 100
individuals who have played a significant role in the history of
the Texas Panhandle. Nominations were solicited from the public
and the final selection was made by a committee of 30 people representing
all walks of life.
Of those 100 individuals, a significant portion are deceased. Forty-five
of those on the list are interred at Llano Cemetery. “That
is a huge portion of our history,” said Lovelady. “We
need to preserve, as well as promote that history. That is why
we are undertaking this project.”
Here are the guidelines to participate in “Share the Story.” Each
story must be about an individual who is interred at Llano Cemetery.
Stories are to be 400 works or less and must be typed. Submit stories
to Carol Lovelady at Llano Cemetery, P.O. Box 563, Amarillo, RX
79105. There is no deadline for submission.
“
But remember,” said Lovelady, “sometimes you put off
doing something now and it never gets done. Don’t let the
opportunity pass. Take the time now to write down the story of
your family members at Llano.”
